Javad Safavi – Profile Summary

Javad Safavi, born on August 14, 1980 in Tehran, is a screenwriter and a member of the Iranian Cinema Critics and Writers Association (Khaneh Cinema).
Artistic Education:
Since the early 2000s, Safavi has moved closer to cinema through practical experience in screenwriting. In 2014, he completed a screenwriting course at the Karnameh Institute with Shadmehr Rastin, followed by a 2020 film directing course at the Majara Institute with Behnam Behzadi. During this period, he also participated in more than a year of creative writing workshops led by Siamak Golshiri.
Screenwriting Experience:
Since 2014, after joining the Screenwriters Club at the Khaneh Cinema, Safavi has collaborated for ten years as a co-screenwriter with Mohammadreza Gohari. Their work includes the screenplays of Kanafeh, Khoonmordegi and Mahneshan feature films and the 15-episode series Esperloos (for the Filment platform).
Safavi also authored the 30-episode series Fariba TV Series, directed by Mahmoud Moazami, produced by SimaFilm, and broadcast on Iran TV’s Channel 3 from January 12, 2025 to March 2025.
In 2023, Safavi’s short screenplay From Close Distance was selected as a featured script for critique in ten special workshops at the 40th Tehran International Short Film Festival.
Cinema Criticism:
Safavi began his professional journalistic activity in 2005 as the editor of the Iranian cinema section for the website Cinet, the oldest Iranian cinema website. He has contributed to various publications including Hamshahri, Mardomsalari, and the Namavamag and Majara online magazines. Since 2023, he has been a member of the writing team at Filmemrooz, while also contributing to the Culture & Arts section of Iran newspaper and the cinema pages of the Tajrobeh magazine.
Creative Writing:
Safavi’s short story collection, Twenty-Nine Empty Frames, containing 29 stories written between 2017–۲۰۱۸, was published in 2022 by Sib-e Sorkh Publishing in Iran. The book was nominated for Best Short Story Collection at the Second Parantez Literary Award. Several stories were also shortlisted in competitions organized by the Baharan Institute and the Fereshteh Prize.
In addition, Safavi has experience in directing short fiction films and documentary filmmaking.
